Transporting senior adults to and from locations in the community for the purpose of acquiring
or receiving services, to participate in activities, or attend events.
Transportation services reduce isolation and promote successful independent
living.
Transportation has always been a major concern for senior adults who wish to remain independent but can no longer drive. In our mobile society, it seems that the automobile has become a necessity rather than just a convenience. Local senior centers provide transportation service to their meal sites and usually are available for errands around town, such as shopping or local medical appointments. Senior adults are requested to donate towards the cost of the ride. However, transportation between counties and to destinations which are out-of-state is not always available, depending upon where you live. This is of particular concern for senior adults who need certain types of medical care such as dialysis, cancer treatment, and appointments with specialists. Even when transportation is available to other counties, there usually is a fee. Sometimes when frail senior adults are approved for the homemaker program, their homemaker will transport them to approved destinations. But this is not always true. The Egyptian AAA is working with public transit systems to coordinate transportation between counties and to develop new funding sources to expand transportation services, such as forming mass transit districts. Unfortunately, even these efforts don’t always have sufficient funding to provide transportation for all individuals to every possible community or destination. Therefore, most transportation programs prioritize their services in order to serve the most people in the greatest need. Specific information about a local transportation program near you can be obtained by calling your local senior center or contact us. ### |
