Supportive Living Facilities

As we progress through our lives we often reach stages when tough choices must be made. Finding the best care for our older loved ones is often difficult and painful. It is, however, potentially one of the most important family decisions we face.

As people age, no matter how independent they may seem, they often need a little extra help or maybe just someone to check-in on them. This can become more than some families can handle because of their own daily schedules and household needs.

When in-home care is not possible or assisted living is too expensive, Supportive Living Facilities may be a viable alternative. Supportive Living Facilities (SLF) in Illinois are affordable for low and middle income seniors who have a small amount of assets.

The SLF offers a private apartment that can be locked, daily meals, supervision, household chores, transportation to medical appointments, and some personal care such as help getting dressed, just like private pay assisted living facilities (see link below for private pay assisted living facilities listed by county).

Here are the current operational SLF facilities in Southern Illinois:

  1. The Heritage Woods of Benton.
  2. Prairie Living at Chautauqua in Carbondale.
  3. The Manor at Mason Woods in Pinckneyville.
  4. Brookstone Estates of Harrisburg.

Here are SLF facilities which are being planned for the future in Southern Illinois:

  1. River to River of Anna - 2009.
  2. River to River of Marion - 2009.
  3. Autumn Ridge in Vienna - late 2007.

If your loved one’s income and size of their investments (assets) are limited, an SLF may be a good option. A Case Manager can give you and your loved one a free consultation about these options and find out whether or not financial assistance is available. For Southern Illinois, use this link to arrange for a free consultation.
