Assisted living is a residential apartment complex or a special unit in a nursing home where personal care and monitoring is provided by onsite staff. However, staff of an assisted living facility in Illinois cannot provide medical care. Personal care is provided for residents who need assistance with eating, bathing, grooming, dressing, transferring from a bed or chair, and incontinence problems. This care is provided in a homelike setting to meet the needs of the residents. Assisted living offers housekeeping, meals, emergency response systems, help with shopping, transportation, laundry services, medication management, and money management. Licensed assisted living facilities in Illinois must have staff available 24-hours per day to respond to the unexpected needs of the residents. The cost for assisted living varies depending on amount of services needed by the resident and whether governmental assistance is available. Many assisted living facilities are privately financed and their costs can run as high as $1,200 to $2,400 per month, depending on the size of the apartment that is rented and the amount of services needed by the resident. Also, a few assisted living facilities, but not all, have an up-front or buy-in cost. Other facilities are financed with support from the government, making assisted living affordable for middle and low-income senior adults. The eligibility standards for these facilities depend on the resident’s income and assets. For more information, contact your local senior center, the Case Management agency, or contact us. |
