Adult Day Services

Adult Day Services (ADS) are designed especially for frail older people who want to remain in their own home or that of a loved one but cannot be home alone during the day due to physical, social, and/or cognitive disorders. ADS services are provided in centers which offer direct care and supervision of adults aged 60 and older. ADS services provide personal attention and activities.

  3. Check our Resource Guide on Aging to find agencies, by county, which provide other services.

Also, ADS centers provide temporary respite for family members who are caring for an impaired older individual in the home. Impaired older people often are not eager to leave their home but usually enjoy themselves once they attend an ADS center.

Adult Day Service centers often provide the following services –

  1. health monitoring, medication supervision, personal care, and therapeutic activities;
  2. interaction with other older people in supervised settings;
  3. social and recreational activities such as arts and crafts, card games, and current events.
  4. snacks and a noon meal;
  5. counseling;
  6. physical therapy with trained professionals can be arranged with a doctors statement; and
  7. in some ADS centers, specialized services are offered for individuals who suffer from dementia such as Alzheimer’s Disease or other related disorders.

Services and activities are based on the individual’s needs and ability to participate. ADS participants are encouraged to participate in the daily planning of activities.

Adult Day Services can serve the needs of family members who may need to take a break from care giving responsibilities, or who may work outside the home during the day.

There are some subsidy assistance programs, depending on the individual’s financial situation, but even the full cost is less than institutional care.
